Responsibilities

As a PostgreSQL Database Administrator, you will contribute to our core products, perform database administration tasks across instances within Fast Hosting Services, and provide support for client installations with Fast Centralized Tech services. This position will join the Centralized Tech Team out of the FAST Headquarters and Development Center in Centennial, CO. You will have a hybrid schedule with both work-from-home and in-office days. Travel will be rare, but you should be flexible and able to travel when required. 

You will manage PostgreSQL databases across multiple product lifecycle environmentsfrom development to mission-critical production systemswhile configuring and maintaining database servers and processes. 

The FAST application is ODBC compliant. Installations include both Microsoft SQL Server and Postgres, with multiple historical installations in Oracle. This position will focus primarily on Postgres, but you will likely have opportunities to work with SQL Server. 

Key responsibilities of this position include: 

  • PostgreSQL installation and maintenance 
  • Install and configure new database servers using best practices.
  • Knowledge of High Availability (HA) and Disaster Recovery (DR).
  • Upgrade and service pack implementation.
  • Backup and recovery 
  • Ensure all database servers are backed up. 
  • Perform restoration testing.
  • Database maintenance 
  • Define and implement maintenance plans for database systems.
  • Standardize maintenance approaches across systems.
  • Index and statistics maintenance.
  • Database monitoring 
  • Proactively identify, troubleshoot, and resolve live database system issues.
  • Capacity planning and forecasting.
  • Creating and reviewing data access audits.
  • Tracking and reporting on Recovery Point Objectives (RPO) metrics. 
  • Performance and tuning 
  • Identification of queries having the largest performance impact.
  • Improvements to indexes and execution plans.
  • Troubleshoot transaction and concurrency issues. 
  • Assist developers with query optimization.
  • Documentation and training 
  • Create documentation on processes and procedures. 
  • Providing training for developers and other technical resources. 
  • Data conversion 
  • Assist with data migrations between DBMS platforms.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate should be enthusiastic about database administration, a quick learner, and a self-starter. The position is part of a database administration team of 4-5 employees within a technical team of roughly 45 employees, contributing to internal development and client projects across the United States and abroad. 

  • Required Experience 
  • Bachelors degree in computer science or a related field 
  • 2-5 years of Postgres experience 
  • 2-4 years of database administration experience 
  • 1 year of experience performing or supporting application development 
     
  • Additional Qualifications: 
  • SQL Server DBMS experience 
  • Linux OS experience 
  • PowerShell experience 
  • C#, VB.Net, or other object-oriented development language experience 
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment 
  • Strong understanding of database structure and design principles 
  • Familiarity with database security principles 
  • Solid script skills including PSQL scripting and stored procedures 
  • Familiarity with a variety of installation platforms including Linux, Windows, Cloud, and Cloud provider-managed instances 
  • Effective prioritization of tasks 
  • Successful time management 
  • Demonstrated effectiveness within a team environment 
  • Strong communication skills
